Root canal treatment

What is a root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is a nerve and blood vessel system, known as the dental pulp. When this tissue becomes inflamed or infected, for example due to tooth decay, a leaking filling, or trauma to the tooth, it can cause pain, swelling, or sensitivity. To prevent further damage and save the tooth, a root canal treatment in The Hague may be necessary. During this treatment, the infected tissue is removed and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Symptoms and causes

Nerve inflammation may present as:

Throbbing or aching pain
Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
Swelling or a puffy cheek
A bump (fistula) on the gums

Painkillers or antibiotics may offer temporary relief, but only a root canal treatment removes the infection completely.

How does the treatment work?

The procedure is done in one or more sessions, depending on the severity and number of canals. Front teeth usually have 1–2 canals; molars may have 2–4. More canals mean a longer and more complex treatment.

  • The procedure is painless with local anesthesia
  • X-rays are taken to assess the anatomy and infection
  • We access the canal through the tooth and clean it with nickel-titanium files
  • In a follow-up visit, the canals are filled with gutta percha
  • The tooth is rebuilt with composite or a post if needed
  • After one year, a control X-ray is taken and a crown or onlay is often recommended

Aftercare and recovery

After a root canal treatment at Tandzorg Statenkwartier, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. We recommend taking paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed. If you experience increasing pain or swelling, please contact us immediately.

In more complex cases, we may refer you to a specialist endodontist for further treatment.

The result is a tooth that is preserved, pain free, and able to function normally for many years.
